Am I getting what I need from my Multi?

Multi-Vitamins are the most commonly utilised health supplements in both the health and fitness industry and the general population. They have become so readily available and easily accessible to everyone, leading many to feel like they are a necessity to take. With countless brands and companies releasing their own ‘perfect’ Multi-Vitamin, the market has become saturated with options, making it next to impossible to choose which Multi is best suited for you and your goals. So where do you start, and what do you look for from a Multi-Vitamin? Lets dive a little deeper and unveil some key points that will assist you in selecting the right product for your body.

Multi-Vitamins, when used correctly can yield some great health benefits. They are there to help support general health and wellbeing while acting to fight off chronic conditions and other potential health risks that can be developed through nutrient deprivation. We often take a Multi-Vitamin as a ‘cover all bases’ type of supplement, which in many cases can lead to them being taken unnecessarily. In order to gain the full benefits of a Multi, it is important to first look into your nutrition and possible nutrient deficiencies you may have, as these could be rectified by the addition of Multi-Vitamin supplementation.

Multi-Vitamins can be very useful, especially for those who have a poor diet that is deprived of certain nutrients we require. A good Multi-Vitamin will act to provide the essential vitamins and minerals that we may be lacking, however due to everyone’s diet and food sources being different, the requirements on which Multi to take are individual specific, so be sure to get a good idea what vitamins and minerals you may be requiring.

Each Multi-Vitamin has varied nutrients present and in varied dosages, so the one you select should reflect the vitamins and minerals that you may be lacking from your nutrition. Try to select a Multi-Vitamin that provides adequate dosages to cover your deficiencies and bridge nutrient’s gaps in the diet.

Be sure to read the label carefully and identify which nutrients are present and in which dosage. When making your selection, aim to choose a Multi-Vitamin that provides close to 100% of the Daily Value (DV) of most of the ingredients in that product. Keep in mind that some nutrients such as magnesium and calcium require large dosages, so these may not be included at 100% DV as the capsules would become too large to swallow. One thing to avoid is products that overdose your nutrients well over 100% DV, as certain nutrients can build up in your system and become toxic, having a deleterious effect on you health, the exact opposite of what we are trying to achieve.

In regards to quality, you generally get what you pay for with a Multi-Vitamin. If it looks too good to be true, then it probably is… For example, the label claims such as “One capsule a day gives you 100% DV of every nutrient plus more!” then its quality and efficacy is definitely in question. One final little thing to add is to check the serving size, remember the capsule that encases the product you take needs to fit a certain amount of active ingredients, so expect to be taking relatively large capsules or multiple capsules daily in order to be getting the correct dosages of certain nutrients.

Multi-Vitamins can provide great benefit in regards to convenience and financial viability. When purchasing and preparing a wide array of nutrient dense foods becomes an unrealistic expectation, implementing a good Multi-Vitamin suited to your nutrient requirements can make the difference between staying fit and healthy or lacking the ability to function optimally. Be smart with your choice and only utilise what your body requires, if done correctly, supplementing with a high quality Multi-Vitamin is a brilliant way to optimize your health and longevity.
