The Secret Benefits of Matcha

In the last few years, Matcha has become a full-blown craze. You can find it in everything – lattes, cakes, juices, chocolate and smoothies, all hosting this new and mysterious ingredient. Matcha has actually been around for thousands of years in Japanese culture and is praised for its numerous health benefits. Matcha is made from green tea leaves, but it’s grown and processed differently to regular tea. In the last three weeks before harvest, it’s grown in the shade to reduce the pace of photosynthesis and boost the chlorophyll and amino acid production in the leaves. The tea leaves are then ground into matcha powder. This means that there are more nutrients in matcha than green tea, because you consume the entire tea leaf. This superfood can help you to:

Lose Weight:

As matcha is a more concentrated form of green tea, it contains heaps more antioxidants. One class of antioxidants in particular, called catechins, are known to play a big role in weight loss and lipid metabolism. Catechins enhance the amount of energy that your body uses, meaning that your body can burn excess fat and calories. Matcha speeds up metabolism in a process of thermogenesis, which means your body burns more calories.

Detox your Body:

As mentioned, due to the way it’s grown, matcha contains high levels of chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is a powerful detox agent in the body, clinging to environmental pollutants, metals and even carcinogens. This makes chlorophyll great for detoxifying the blood and promoting healthy blood alkalinity.

Boost Energy:

Matcha contains a unique form of caffeine called theophylline. Unlike the caffeine in coffee, theophylline has a slower release which means it’s a longer lasting and more sustained source of energy.

Enhance your Mental Capabilities:

Matcha helps to keep you relaxed and calm. It contains L-Theanine which is an amino acid that increases the alpha waves in your brain. The unique combination of L-Theanine and theophylline ensure that you’re relaxed whilst still alert. L-Theanine also helps your brain produce dopamine and serotonin, which can enhance your mood and improve your memory.

With these health benefits in mind, matcha is definitely worth incorporating into your diet. We’ve recently introduced X50’s new Vita-Matcha Energy Drink into stores. It also contains Vitamin B to aid protein synthesis and hormone production, and Goji Berries for amino acids and protein. X50 Vita-Matcha is great for getting the benefits of matcha in a refreshing energy drink.
