What’s The Best Type of Training For Me?

Choosing the best type of training is becoming an increasingly difficult process, now that there are so many various training styles, methods, splits, and intensities to consider. As the fitness industry continues to grow, so does the constant desire to find the ‘best’ and most ‘optimal’ way to train for specific results. So how do you narrow down what’s best for you? We get asked this question a lot but it may be easier than you think!

While its easy to get caught up in the newest, trendy training methods, sold as ‘the next best thing’, deciding which training type will best suit you is not an overly complex thing to work out. Instead of diving into the long list of different training options out there, we’re instead going to look at three simple steps you should take when making the decision of which training style you should pick.

First and foremost you need to set a goal, what is it that you’re looking to achieve. Having a goal provides you with a driving force, keeping you accountable and giving your training purpose. Whether your goal is weight loss, muscle gain, endurance, general health or even just mental release; identifying this and truly committing to achieving it will set you on desire driven path and allow you to start narrowing in on the type of training you should consider.

Once the goal is established we can start to do a little bit of research into the types of training that will best complement what you’re setting out to achieve. While learning about different training styles and methods, it is important to keep an open mind and remember that there is no ‘one way’ to do things. What may have worked for one person may not work for you, so stay subjective through this step. Remember, you can always take bits and pieces from various workouts and training styles to customize your own ideal plan.

The final step is to assess what you have learnt about which training types are most conducive to your goals. Look at implementing aspects of these into your own plan, but do so with one very important thing in mind… This is where the biggest and most fundamental part of identifying your ideal training style comes into play; that is, to enjoy what you choose! Over all else, this is essential when deciding how you want to train. Enjoyment leads to consistency and consistency leads to results. If you don’t enjoy what you do, then sticking to your program will become a chore, which is the last thing you want to turn your training time into.

While it is important to consider the science and educate yourself on what training methods yield certain results, it is also important that you come to your own conclusion and settle on a style that works for your body. Choose a training type that not only leads you down a path towards your goals, but one that you really ENJOY! Adherence is number one. You could have the greatest, most optimal training split in the world, but if you don’t enjoy it, you wont stick to it, so what would be the point? The results don’t come if your heart isn’t in it; after all, that’s why most of us train in the first place right? Out of our love, passion, desire, fulfillment and enjoyment that training provides us. Try not to forget that, and choose a training style that you can stick to and truly enjoy. Put in the hard work, stay consistent, and enjoy what you do, by simply doing this, no matter which training style you decide on, the results you desire will come as a consequence of your hard work and consistent efforts.

An important final thing to note is that, just because you chose or commit to a particular training style, doesn’t mean you have to do that for the rest of your life. Your goals may change or you may find enjoyment in a various array of training techniques that you discover on your fitness journey. Don’t be afraid to push yourself, try new things and develop into the best you that you can be.
